Horchata – a song by Vampire Weekend

10 Sep

I happened to Google “What is horchata?” and a Yahoo answer caught my eye:

“What does horchata taste like?”

The answer given to him:

Horchata varies in taste across Latin America. Although the drinks may share the same name, the flavor of each is unique to its country of origin.

So Yahoo user…what DOES horchata taste like? Heaven. Sweet Heaven with a side of nap. You know that five minute nap where you managed to get a short dream in and wake up feeling recharged? Well that.

I am Hispanic and have had a large share of horchatas but this song Horchata I have not. Yet somehow, Vampire Weekend managed to create a melody that described my very own horchata flavor: sweet heaven with a side of nap.

Karma Police by Radiohead

They usually say “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”.

But after catching a local band, all while downing two beers and sipping a shot of tequila, I decided that this was not going to stay in Vegas. Because it was just AWESOME.

Karma Police by Radiohead.

I never did get the name of the local band, but they ended their set with this song and I sang along and downloaded the tune into my phone the next day. What an amazing track. That’s all.

Lights Out! (Santigold)

18 Jun

I didn’t know there was such a thing as creating a playlist on Youtube! The BF has amazing playlists and I wanted to be cool just like him. So I created one, simply titled: Nancy’s Playlist, cuz it is. I added a variety of beats that kinda get me to do a little shoulder action. To be honest, I have never listened to any of Santigold’s music; I’ve only heard of her. For some reason, I clicked on this video here, and it has now been added to my Vegas Mix. It’s kinda cool, the song. I dig it and I’m sure you will add to some sort of playlist as well.

Beautiful…I Just Want You To Know (Snoop Dogg)

11 Jun

I like the fresh beats in this song and Pharell’s smooth voice.
Too many “beautiful” songs out there but this one adds some spice to the romance. And I don’t know a girl that doesn’t listen to this song and doesn’t think it is dedicated to her. If you are that girl, listen again. What a sweet song that instantly boosts my self-esteem.
Best part of this week’s pick – Snoop Dogg’s LYRICS! Kinda silly but amusing to sing along to:
“come on baby boo, you gotsta get into it – don’t fool wit the playa with the cool whip”
“You got my pictures on the wall in your room-in – Girls be complainin’ you keep me boomin’ but girls like that wanna listen to Pat Boone”
“Nothin’ I do is new to you – I smack up the world if they rude to you ’cause baby girl you so beautiful..”

Donna Summer – the Disco Momma

18 May

Growing up, I often felt like the Cinderella of the house, cleaning away wondering why nobody else was suffering the way I was: broom and all. But there were those times I didn’t mind scrubbing the floor or sweeping the back yard because I had great people to keep me company. And one of them was the astonishing Donna Summer. At 10 years-old, I found her CD in my step-dad’s collection and decided to give disco a try. So there I was, wearing bright green shorts, my chanclas (sandals) and whatever old shirt I could find dancing and singing along to “Bad Girls” while cleaning the house:

“Hey, mista, have you got a dime? Beep, Beep…Aha!”

I was so sad yesterday after hearing the news of her death. I had memorized all of her songs (can you imagine a 10-year-old singing “Love to Love You, Baby“?) and even created dance routines for my favorites songs. Well that was when I was 10 and after cleaning the bathroom for a while, I would stop and bust out some moves while singing alongside my Disco Queen.

the CD that introduced me to Disco

Donna Summer was the first artist to have scored three No. 1 double albums. She also had 3 Multi-Platinum albums in the U.S. and was the first female African American to receive an MTV Video Music Awards nomination. Donna Summer received 5 Grammys and according to Billboard Magazine, she was the eighth most successful female recording artist in history!

Shakira – Antes De Las Seis

17 May

Before Shakira dyed her hair blonde and introduced her hips to the world, she was a brunette rockstar in the Spanish community. This live performance reminds me why I’m such a fan.

Her lyrics are undoubtedly poetic and her voice contains so much power. Whether you understand Spanish or not, you’ll agree that her voice is a gem in this live performance. Did you read that? I said LIVE performance – not many artists can sound as good live as on their CDs.

I will always prefer Shakira’s Spanish songs but I will never underestimate the power of her voice.

I’m Going Back to 505 – Arctic Monkeys

16 Apr

This song….
singing with my eyes closed…
I want to drown in it…
it literally….
tears my heart out…..
gently gives it back…
tears immerse…
feelings burst…
505 baby…
I’m going back…
